Inside the LED volume: what makes a display camera-ready
Virtual production asks more of an LED wall than any other application. Refresh, colour, latency and pixel structure all show up on the sensor.
The camera sees what the eye forgives
A display that looks flawless to a human can flicker, band and moiré on camera. Virtual production specifies for the sensor: refresh rate above 7,680 Hz, high grey-scale bit depth, and a pixel pitch matched to the camera-to-wall distance and focal length.
Colour science
The wall is a light source and a backdrop at once. Wide colour gamut LEDs, per-cabinet calibration and a stable white point across brightness levels are what let the DP light talent against the wall without colour shifts.
In a volume, the LED wall is the location. It has to behave like one.
Geometry: ceiling, floor, wrap
Volumes combine a curved background wall, a ceiling for reflections and often a load-bearing LED floor. Each surface has different demands — the floor carries people and dollies, the ceiling is lit for bounce, the wall is in shot. A modular platform lets all three come from one system.
Latency and sync
Genlock between camera, render engine and LED processor keeps frustum and background aligned. Total system latency under a few frames is the target; every processing stage must be measured.
